  2. Step 2: Select drive to scan and options
  3. Step 3: Wait while Windows scans your hard drive

Defragmenter

  1. Step 1: Open Defragmenter
  2. Step 2: Select drive to defragment
  3. Step 3: Wait while Windows defragments your hard drive

ScanDisk

1.To run ScanDisk, first shut off all other programs. Then click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and ScanDisk

2.Make sure that the C: drive is selected (if you have multiple drives, you can select them, as well). Now, select the type of scan you wish to perform. For general purposes, the Standard check is perfectly fine. If your data has been acting up recently, choose Thorough instead. You may also want to choose Thorough every once in a while to check the hard drive's physical integrity. Make sure that the Automatically Fix Errors checkbox is indeed checked (click the box if not) then click Start on the ScanDisk panel.

3.Go make a pot of coffee or tea, or start reading that book you've been meaning to read. Just don't do anything that requires the use of that computer for a while, because you are going to have to wait, especially if you chose the Thorough scan. Once the scan is done you can just click OK, then Close.

Disk Defragmenter

1.To run Disk Defragmenter (a.k.a. "Defrag"), close all other programs, then click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter.

2.Make sure that the C: drive is selected (if you have other drives, you can select them, as well), then click OK.

3.Go get another cup of coffee/tea if you're so inclined, or continue on that book, because you're going to have to wait again. If you're really bored or a big computer geek, you can click on Show Details to see a visual representation of your hard drive being defragmented. Once the Defragmenter is done, click Exit.

-- Important --

Disk Defragmentation is very important because it can speed up hard drive access time. Normally, when the computer puts information onto the hard drive, it simply throws it anywhere. Defragmentation is something like telling your computer to clean up its room.

Generally, you'll want to run Scandisk before you Defragment, because you don't want the Defragmenter to move things onto bad clusters where the data becomes unreadable. ScanDisk marks off bad clusters on your hard drive so nothing can go on them.

You're done!
